It’s Only Thunder

I’m sitting here a little before 2 a.m., in the middle of a beautiful May thunderstorm, enjoying the peaceful sound of steady, pouring rain, with just a bit of thunder mixed in here and there.

Eva (who was asleep) doesn’t find it relaxing, though…to her, the loud thunderclaps are alarming- big and scary.  I’ve been reassuring her, “It’ll be ok, Eva…Daddy’s right here.  It can’t really hurt you- it’s only thunder.”

I wonder what she’s thinking as each round of thunder seems to affect her a little less than the one before…”The last ‘boom’ didn’t hurt me, maybe this one won’t, either.”

She’s learning- kinda like I am- that some things are only scary if we think of them that way.  Maybe they’re frightening because we can’t control them, or because they seem to come out of nowhere, or because they make us feel helpless and vulnerable.

Whether it’s a family situation that’s out of my hands, a bill that needs paid, a fast-approaching deadline, or just something that I need to stop worrying about, my Father gently lets me know, “It’ll be ok…I’m here.  It can’t really hurt you- trust me.”

With each startling clap of thunder in my life, I start to realize more and more that the last one didn’t really hurt me.  It may have been inconvenient, not fitting in with my plans or ideals, and maybe it was initially frightening, but that caused me to cling to Him and learn to trust Him more completely.

What’s the biggest fear in your life right now?  No matter how loud and scary the storm might seem, trust your Father!  It’s only thunder.  🙂

“A good man…shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.”

– Psalm 112:5-7

  • Beautifully true. Thank you for saying it so well. I’m there right now–hearing lots of thunder and unable to do anything about it. I can only rest knowing that I have a heavenly Father.
